However you feel about the American Horror Story franchise’s various installments, you cannot deny that Ryan Murphy and Co. are wildly creative when it comes to their yearly dish of blood-curdling terror. From the swanky digs of a haunted hotel to the tortuous backroom dealings of an insane asylum, the series has run the gamut. Season 8 was no different — it explored the aftermath of a global apocalypse while also revisiting two earlier seasons, much to the fans’ delight.
That nostalgic journey was a fun direction for the eighth iteration, which may preview good things with the upcoming ninth season because it too looks to be somewhat nostalgic. In April, Murphy revealed via Instagram post that the season will be called American Horror Story: 1984, and the clip he shared had a definite Friday the 13th slasher vibe, which could be a scary, campy and highly enjoyable theme for season nine.
With AHS: 1984 coming up later this year, let’s take a look back at the past eight seasons, ranking them in order from worst to best. Each season has its own positives and negatives, so weigh in in the comments if you agree or disagree with Collider’s definitive ranking.
